BRIEF DESCRIPTION

The Curriculum Department Division is a core and highly functional division of the Education Resource Centre (ERC). Headed by Dr. Fadimatu Bello, CDD is responsible for supporting curriculum development, implementation, quality assurance, and enrichment across public and private schools in the Federal Capital Territory.

The division operates through four specialized branches:

1. Language Branch

Language Branch provides guidance and support for the teaching and learning of Nigerian and foreign languages in FCT schools, with special focus on French. The branch equips teachers with modern instructional tools and up-to-date resources, conducts in-house language training programmes, and facilitates capacity building in both Nigerian and foreign languages. It also maintains strategic collaborations with institutions such as the French Foreign Consulate in Nigeria and other relevant bodies to strengthen the delivery of language education across the FCT.

2. Implementation Branch

The Implementation Branch is responsible for the effective dissemination and implementation of approved schemes of work, recommended booklists, and other curriculum resources in FCT schools. The branch maintains continuous engagement with both public and private school representatives and conducts routine monitoring exercises to verify compliance with the Nigerian National Curriculum and the use of quality-assured instructional materials.

3. Book Review and Book Fair Branch

This branch works closely with authors and publishing houses to promote access to high-quality, curriculum-aligned learning materials. It coordinates the triennial book review exercise in which subject and literature textbooks are assessed by subject experts, leading to the production of the approved FCT Recommended Booklist. The branch also organizes the Annual FCT Book Fair, giving schools and parents the opportunity to purchase approved textbooks directly from publishers, thereby enhancing affordability and discouraging book piracy. In addition, it conducts professional in-house book reviews for authors upon request.

4. Co-Curricular Branch

The Co-Curricular Branch focuses on promoting co-curricular activities in government schools across the FCT. It organizes inter- and intra-school competitions in areas such as dance, drama, spelling, quizzes, and subject-based contests, fostering student engagement, teamwork, creativity, and healthy competition. The Branch also collaborates with private organizations and partners in sponsoring educational competitions and prizes for students.
