Guidance & Counselling (G&C)

Key functions of this branch include:

1. Running of the G&C clinic
2. Monitoring the blood pressure and body weight of ERC staff and the general public
3. Measuring the clients’ Body Mass Index (BMI)
4. Providing Family and Marital Counselling services
5. Counselling the emotionally disturbed
6. Counselling school drop-outs
7. Counselling persons with disabilities
8. Providing referral services
9. Conducting counselling follow-up services.
10. Organising mental health talks

Functions of this branch include: 

• The branch coordinates the procurement, sales and distribution of Psychological Test Materials and Cumulative Record Folders. These materials are used mainly by guidance counsellors in schools to assist students with emotional, educational, vocational and personal challenges.

1.   Psychological Tests Materials include:
2. Vocational Interest Inventory (V.I.I.)
3. Study Habit Inventory (S.H.I.)
4. Student Problem Inventory (S.P.I.)
5. Motivation for Occupational Preference Scale (M.O.P.S.)
6. Cumulative Record Folders are used to maintain the comprehensive records of students’ academic and co-curricular activities.

• Organizing Refresher courses and ‘Training the trainers’ workshops for counsellors on the use and administration of psychological tests materials.
• Developing & reviewing Guidance and Counselling Schemes of Work for FCT Schools.

This branch coordinates the G&C activities in Junior Secondary Schools and Primary Schools within the FCT. Its functions include:

• Procurement, sales and distribution of Psychological Test Materials and Cumulative Record Folders.

3. Student Problem Inventory (S.P.I.)
4. Cumulative Record Folders are used to maintain and update students’ academic and co-curricular records.

• Organizing Refresher courses and ‘Training the trainers’ workshops for counsellors.
• Monitoring the junior secondary and primary schools in the FCT.
• Developing & reviewing G&C Schemes of Work for FCT Schools.

The unit carries out the following activities:

1. Identifying common deviant behaviors among students.
2. Analysing the causes of identified deviant behaviors.                                                                                                   
3. Proffering remediation measures. 
4. Rating schools based on occurrence of deviant behaviours
