The Federal Capital Territory Administration is approaching a major milestone in its sweeping overhaul of public education infrastructure, with between 60% and 70% of ongoing secondary school renovation projects expected to be completed and commissioned by the first quarter of 2026. The initiative, led by Minister Nyesom Wike, is widely regarded by officials as one of the most ambitious education infrastructure programmes ever undertaken in the nation’s capital.

Driven by a commitment to close longstanding infrastructure gaps, the initiative aims to ensure that students in satellite towns and rural communities benefit from modern learning environments comparable to those in urban centres.

Scale and execution of the transformation

The “Bricks and Books” initiative represents a shift from partial repairs to comprehensive, whole-school rehabilitation. According to Mandate Secretary for Education Danlami Hayyo, the transformation has significantly elevated the standard of public schools across the territory.

More than 100 public secondary schools have already undergone full renovation, while implementation has followed a phased structure. The administration initially flagged off rehabilitation works on 19 schools under the 2023 Supplementary Budget, followed by another 20 schools in the 2024 cycle. Plans are also underway to commence rehabilitation on an additional 40 schools, further expanding the reach of the programme.

Strategic funding and fiscal commitment

The rapid pace of progress has been supported by strong financial backing and strategic fiscal planning. In early 2024, the administration approved N30.9 billion specifically for school rehabilitation. This was complemented by a broader N288 billion supplementary budget approved to fund priority infrastructure and social sector projects.

To ensure continuity and prevent project abandonment, mobilization funds were secured in advance. The minister has publicly emphasized that contractors will be paid promptly, reinforcing confidence in the programme’s execution and timeline.

Modern facilities and improved learning conditions

The initiative adopts a comprehensive “whole-school approach,” addressing not only classrooms but every component of the learning environment. Upgrades include modern classrooms, fully equipped science laboratories, and expanded libraries designed to support science and technology education.

Student welfare facilities, including hostels, dining halls, and sanitation systems, are also being rehabilitated. Essential utilities such as motorized boreholes ensure reliable water supply, while solar-powered streetlights enhance safety. Thousands of units of modern furniture have been installed to replace aging and inadequate classroom fixtures.

Bridging the urban–rural education gap

A key objective of the programme is to promote equity by extending infrastructure upgrades to underserved communities. Area councils such as Abaji, Kuje, Kwali and Gwagwalada have been prioritized alongside schools in the Abuja Municipal Area Council.

Officials say early results are encouraging, with improved student morale, stronger academic performance, and growing participation in science, robotics and technology competitions.

Commissioning and future outlook

To highlight the progress achieved, the administration has scheduled a dedicated 20-day commissioning period focused on education projects. The initiative forms part of the broader Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, which prioritizes human capital development alongside physical infrastructure.

With capital expenditure proposals continuing to emphasise education and infrastructure, the “Bricks and Books” programme is expected to leave a lasting legacy—modernising public schools, strengthening academic outcomes, and expanding opportunities for students across the Federal Capital Territory.
